What is Machine Learning and why do we trust it?

Machine Learning algorithms are a specialized set of techniques which are particularly good at fitting non-standard statistical problems. In statistics, we are often forced to make strong assumptions about distributions and are restricted to small numbers of variables. Problems in which ML excel are ones in which little is known about the data distributions, and where large numbers of variables are concerned. While p-values are rarely available for ML problems (since they are dependent on the data assumptions) the validation of ML techniques is extremely stringent and follows methodologies which are well understood also by advanced statisticians.
